Applying your Canadian Study Visa:

It has to be considered that an application for international study to Canada can be a slow process, taking up to 7 weeks of processing time. Keeping this in mind, you need to be making a timely decision to get all the documentation done prior to your academic calendar. A student visa, or study permit is required, which is granted on the base of the acceptance letter from your chosen Canadian education institution.

Secondly, you’ll also need your application fee, financial evidence to cover your expenses during your studies, such as to pay for tuition fees and cover day to day living costs, as well as a ticket home.

All international students need a student visa for Canada except;

  • ou enrolled in a programme that lasts less than six months.

  • You are a family or staff member of a foreign representative in Canada, who is accredited by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada.

  • You are a member of foreign armed forces from the Visiting Forces Act

  • You are a citizen of another country, but you have an Indian status registered in Canada

However, in this case an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) will suffice to fly to Canada.

How to file your application:
  • After receiving the acceptance letter from the university, it is time to proceed and apply for a student visa with no delay.

  • For applying your student visa, following steps need to be followed:

  • Apply online for your Canadian student visa, on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) website;

  • In some countries it’s also possible to apply for visa on paper;

  • Provide the acceptance letter from the institution you have applied (the university should be recognized by the Canadian government);

  • Provide proof of sufficient financial resources to support your studies in Canada, including tuition fees and your living expenses;

  • Provide a Police Certificate to prove that you have no criminal record;

  • Submit medical certificates that state you are in good health, and complete medical examinations in some cases.

  • Note that the study permit expires ninety days after your studies are complete, and when you receive a notification of the programme completion.

  • Proof that you paid the study permit fee (150 CAD),

  • The original letter of acceptance from the university,

  • A valid passport/travel document,

  • If you are a U.S. resident then travel document is not necessary,

  • Two recent passport-size photographs, with name and date of birth mentioned on the back,

  • Proof of financial support during your studies which provides: tuition fee + 833 CAD/month (for all provinces, except Quebec), or tuition fee + 917 CAD/month (for Quebec);

  • A letter of explanation,

  • If you intend to study in Quebec, you will also need a Certificat d’acceptation du Québec, English and French translations for your document, a statement from the translator and a certified copy of the original documents,

Biometrics appointment and interview

If you are applying from Pakistan, you might have to get your biometrics taken at a Visa Application Centre in your country. The biometric fee is 85 CAD. It is additional to the regular visa fee. Some countries are exempt from the biometrics requirement, i.e. they won’t need to visit an application centre at all.

Depending on your individual situation you might also be called for an interview, for which a small amount of fee will be charged by the local visa application centers for using their services.
